Havana a Ball!

I couldn’t help the play on words when I came up with the title for this blog post about our trip to Havana.  I could have titled this “Havana a Laugh” but to be honest our trip wasn’t all fun and games.  But bottom line we did have a ball in Havana.  While we were there for the Havana Film Festival, seeing on average three films per day, we did squeeze in some sightseeing. My Bite of the Big Apple

Though I left New York over a week ago, I wanted to post a round up of the visit there before too much time passes.  Having lived and worked in New York for three years and to go back there again as a tourist was a unique experience unto itself.  While it is a city with a personality like no other, it is steeped in history and rich in culture. Yet it is always changing and there is vitality in its newness. So I visited places I had been before and saw some spots for the first time. Recipe: Communal Bowl of Soup

Without a doubt, soups are a communal meal. It became very clear to me on my first night at Ballymaloe Cookery School.  It was the eve of the twelve weeks course and many of us had traveled far and wide to be at this oasis in the Irish countryside. It was a cold rainy January and diving into a bowl of Cream of Mushroom Soup while huddled up in one of the cottages on campus was a welcome treat.  I mentioned it in my very first blog Karen in County Cork. Last Minute Dot Com Christmas

One of my favorite things about being Irish and living in Ireland is the wit and clever use of language. I heard this phrase by an Irish person referring to the Irish as”last minute dot com” people.  It has always stuck with me. In many ways this can be true. However, I have known many Irish that are particularly organized and early when it comes to Christmas gift shopping. If you’re not prepared however for the looming day, never fear.
