Foodie Fieldtrip Friday: Climb and Dine

IMG_7787

Nope, this isn’t an April Fools joke my friends. This is not only a Foodie Fieldtrip Friday, but its a Fearful, Freaky and Fun one too! I’ve been wanting to climb the O2 since I found out it was an actual activity.  But the weather can wreak havoc on plans of scaling the largest concert hall in Europe! So with improved weather, and the discovery that there is a package you can purchase that includes a meal I was like, HELLO where can I sign up!?

IMG_7759

I told no one, including my Hubby, as I know he would have worried about my safety. And I surreptitiously booked and printed out my ticket without his knowing.  How did he find out? Why social media of course.  Oops not the best!   But I was going to tell him, he just saw my Instagram photo first!  Then he watched my snapchat story (though it has since expired, you are welcome to come over anytime to watch my wacky goings on at: blissbakery).  While we weren’t allowed to take snaps during the ascent or descent, we were able to do so while getting prepared to go up and of course on top of the summit!  Once we got down, I was so hungry I went straight to lunch! But I had to take this pic of the next group on their way up.  It made me feel really proud of myself for doing it!

IMG_7779

The “Up at the O2” is a great way to see the view of London and the surrounding areas, while experiencing a breathtaking trek up and down a national landmark.  Though originally started as an activity coinciding with the 2012 Olympics, it was so popular that it is still going stronger than ever. They offer original climbs, twilight climbs and sunset climbs as well as the climb and dine which I did. They also have private climbs for parties, corporate team building and they even have a climb for those in wheelchairs.  It is actually one of the most popular climbs as people with limited mobility are able to experience the thrill of rock climbing in a safe and supportive setting.

IMG_7783IMG_7794

I brought along my pal #snappy (the Snapchat mascot) and snapped pics of him along the way. I loved the whole process from step one of check in, to “training” to getting suited and booted. Of course the climb itself was a massive adrenaline rush.  I was scared, but with our guide Chris I felt well looked after.  And though I was the first climber, I was strapped in and 100% safe!  It was perfect weather, sunny and a bit of a cool breeze.  But the walk up was a bit bouncy due to the material used for the fabric walkway.

IMG_7785IMG_7798

Once up to the top, everyone was buzzing around, taking photos and spotting all the different famous sights in the skyline. The total time of the tour was 90 minutes including our induction training and getting fitted with our gear. I was surprised at how much upper body strength was needed on the ascent. The decent was much steeper and used more leg strength. At its highest it is 52 meters, which is 170 feet (or the equivalent of a 17 story building).

IMG_7800IMG_7799IMG_7763

Once we were down and undressed we were able to peruse the souvenir shop and purchase professional photos of ourselves. Though I didn’t get any goodies apart from a photo magnet, I think someone else had fun playing around!

IMG_7765IMG_7767IMG_7768

Just a few last snaps before heading out to lunch, just to let Hubby know we were all safe and sound, and that we were total explorers!

IMG_7764IMG_7766

Inside of the O2 there are numerous restaurants, cafes and bars. The voucher stated I was to have a two course meal at All Bar One. They were all ready and waiting for me with a personalized reserved table.  I was near the Cocktail Bar, which was quite tempting to calm the nerves after the exhilaration!

IMG_7771IMG_7757IMG_7772

The menu I was shown was an abbreviated one from the normal restaurant menu. Which was fine, and I spotted what I wanted right away. The butternut squash burger sounded delish. But the waitress had to return to the table to tell me they were out of them. So I ordered a pasta dish. Then another server arrived to tell me that they didn’t have that either. Basically my choices were becoming more narrow by the minute!  I eventually asked her to just tell me what they did have available and then I went for the salmon cakes and salad.

IMG_7773IMG_7774 2

I have to say I wasn’t that impressed with my main course.  I am not usually a harsh critic because as a chef I know how much work it takes just to get something on a plate!  But I have to be honest here and say that the salmon cakes were just so so and the cole slaw was way too mayonnaise-y.  The salad was the best thing on here and it was pretty much all vinegar. The service wasn’t that great either, not a single person came back to check on how things were. It wasn’t that busy in there with lunch customers, but maybe they were busy getting ready for a dinner rush.  Nevertheless each table, no matter the time of day or number of patrons, should be just as important.  Oh well.  However, the good news is that I am a dessert person.  So the Churros came and saved the day!!!  I rearranged them on my plate so that they all looked liked hearts, my fav! And I left a happy camper!

IMG_7776IMG_7777

All in all it was a fantastic Foodie Fieldtrip Friday.  It was definitely a highlight of my time in London so far.  It was not only fun but also terrifying.  I’d like to make up a new word and say it was a terriFUNing day! And I would recommend it to anyone.  Even if you can’t climb the O2, just do something that scares you and stretches your safe zone a bit. You will end up feeling proud of yourself having gained new knowledge of your bravery and what you can actually accomplish!

I churro love you!

YDP

ps. I dedicate this post to two of the most amazing Irish women who inspire me. Though I haven’t known either for very long, they show bravery everyday of their lives. I hope to meet each of them in person one day. Until then I’m glad my wacky adventures bring a smile to their faces! Lots of love to my snap sistas @lilomaria and @emilyrowleyy !

Sunday Spotlight Snap Sista

IMG_5248

The Sunday Spotlight Snap Sista has become one of the most popular installments on my snapchat account (username: blissbakery). I started it as a way to shower someone from Snapchat Land with a little love, and also to help the rest of us learn a bit more about another snapper. And rather than call them by their own name, I refer to them as a Snap Sista. Like a Bosom Buddy, Pen Pal or Facebook Friend, which by the way can be a woman or a man!

Because of the day that is in it today, Easter Sunday, I won’t be doing an episode. Therefore I have decided to take this time to do a little recap.  It has been my utter pleasure to dedicate a Sunday afternoon to make someone out there feel special. These are people I have been watching on Snapchat and they have brought so much fun into my life. So only fair I return the favor! There have been 9 weeks (installments) so far and each one has been a sheer joy to do. I incorporate special music hand picked for each recipient along with a special gift (usually foodie related) that the honoree receives. Then the rest of us get a gift too, which is a quote inspired by the Sunday Spotlight Snap Sista!

Holly Shortall (@hollywooddublin): Holly’s gift was a pair of Glam Kitchen Gloves (with a lashing of leopard print, her fav).  Holly is a world famous fashion illustrator and popular social media personality. I absolutely love this woman and call her a friend!  She is the reason I am on Snapchat and I owe her a great debt no doubt!  She has done several commissioned works for me (including this moving card) and is incredibly talented. Holly always has a funny outlook on life, whether it be about fashion, makeup or current events.  She is Irish and lives in Dublin. Besides her art, she also works for a marketing and media company (@newslangie) and is doing on camera work as well…’litch looking gorge.” A caring philanthropist, she has spent time in the refugee camp in Calais.  The quote for all of us inspired by Holly, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent on things that matter”.

IMG_5817

Miram O’Sullivan (@bakemystyle): Miriam’s gift was a set of Valentine’s themed cupcake cases. Miriam is food/fashion blogger originally from Kerry, Ireland but living in London. She is one of the most fun people to watch on Snapchat, so cheerful and engaging. She is stunning with her bright ginger hair and wears equally bright assorted lip colors. I had the ultimate pleasure of finally meeting her a couple of weeks ago on a Foodie Fieldtrip Friday!  I always look forward to her upbeat snaps.  She brings a bit of sunshine wherever she goes! And occasionally we get to see her adorbs bearded hubby Dave!

IMG_5542Kelly Ging (@KellyLouCakes): Kelly’s gift was a package of rubber erasers in the shape of baked goods. Not that she would need them as I suspect she doesn’t make many mistakes. This lady is a force to be reckoned with!  Kelly is the owner and head baker of Kelly Lou’s Cakes and Cafe in Portlaoise, Ireland.  I was able to meet her when I did a Foodie Fieldtrip Friday out to her place. I ate an amazing Rocky Road Cupcake there too! But the biggest treat of all was meeting Kelly Lou herself. And her smile is even bigger in person! Truly one of the nicest people that ever walked this earth! Hence this quote below inspired by her ethos, which could do all of us some good!

IMG_5846

Paul Broughhall (@paulieblogger): Paul’s gift was a package of marshmallow Peeps. Why you might ask? Well Paul is not only a blogger and children’s author, but he is the creator of the “Artistic Chicks” and it was only fitting he got one of America’s most iconic Easter goodies.! The Artistic Chicks have painted portraits of numerous celebrities and have brought joy to the social media world and beyond. I have never met Paul personally, but his snaps are all about music and art and the stories he creates out of them. I have been told he is quite tall, but if this is the case, he is a gently giant. He is the most lovely and pure soul I have seen. His quote sums it up perfectly:  The nicest thing you can do for anyone in a day is to make them a little bit happier than they were before they met you!

IMG_6497

Katrina Kelly (@KatrinaK2Hair): Katrina’s gift was a large Chocolate Bar wrapped to look like a Million Dollar Bill. Back in January I met Katrina in person. She is so beautiful with her radiant blue eyes.  I met her at her fav coffee place called Treat, just around the corner from one of her shops. I was struck by her beauty, but even more gorgeous is her soul on the inside. A successful business woman with two beauty salons in Dublin, she just launched a make up line called PUSH and she also does makeup/hair master classes. But her #1 job is mommy to her two gorge kids! And this future bride is getting married this summer! Congrats Hun and Matt is one lucky guy!  Katrina is positivity personified! This quote was one I submitted to a contest she was running. I won some PUSH makeup, but even better, I’ve won a lifelong friend!

IMG_6350

Jen Morris (@toodollymakeup): Jen’s gift was a set of lip balms in cute cupcake pots. This girl will eventually rule the world it would appear. She is a super popular blogger, snap chatter and Instagram Queen. She has thousands of loyal followers and she is still as down to earth as the day she left her family home in Clonmel for the big time in Dublin. But she is so popular because she doesn’t mind showing you her bare no makeup look, which is as important as the Glam Jen! She is also as student getting her degree in business. Jen is so generous with her skills and often does makeup tutorials for Snapchat. How she does perfect eyeliner with one hand while holding her camera phone with the other is beyond me!  Not only is the makeup on fleek, but so is she! Love ya Jen!  I’m still practicing and one day I’ll make you proud!

IMG_6561

Tracy Benjamin (@tshutterbean): Tracy’s gift was a salt and pepper shaker set with the logo “Keep Calm and Carry On” Tracy is a San Fran girl.  Hence her snaps reflect that. Along with her son Cooper, husband and a cat named Pinot, Tracy’s style is introverted, thoughtful and awesome. She snaps some of the most beautiful images I have ever seen. Whether it be food, or rain water on a leaf. This girl has the eye and shares it all with us! Tracy’s quote:  Mother’s hold their children’s hands for just a little while, their hearts forever. Perfect for the day as it was Mother’s Day in Ireland the day she was chosen. And as a mom herself (though in America Mother’s Day isn’t celebrate until May) I thought she could appreciate the sentiment behind this Irish proverb.

IMG_6863

Laura Cunningham (@cunninghamlaura):  Laura’s gift was a mug personalized with pics of her cat (#markthecat). I figured since she loves him so much she can have him with her while she is indulging in a cuppa tea at work!  He really is a cute cat! And a bit of a rascal.  I first started to watch her snaps around Christmas when #markthecat would climb the tree and remove the ornaments! Oops!  Laura is an editor with Confetti Magazine as well as the creator of her online gifts store called Hippenings. Laura is always on the ‘best of’ list for snappers and is part of the popular group of snappers called Bridies. Though I have yet to meet her, I feel like I know her. She shares raw uncensored chat about life in general, as well as beautiful images such as a recent ski trip. Utterly dreamy! Her inspired quote is actually from her Instagram account: What would you do if you weren’t afraid?!

IMG_7021

Maria Ryan (@mariaryan2014): Maria’s gift was Coco Pops Cereal Flavored Lip Balm. Say what? Well you would had to have seen her story for this to make sense. But let’s say she took an early morning trip to the store for a giant box of her fav Coco Pops Cereal. And after three bowls shared the rest with the neighborhood birds and cats!  It was classic!  Now the perfect gift would have been the actor Colin Farrell, her Hollywood crush.  This is the girl who I said represented Quality Time from the Five Love Languages book. And it is the truth!  She is the only blogger I know that actually looks at the camera and says, ” how are all of you today?” and checks in with Snapchat each morning and evening. She is a super special person.  In fact she is a play therapist working with autistic children and those suffering from various challenges. I had the pleasure of meeting her for a cuppa back in January and it was lovely!    And no one on Snapchat gives as good a tour as Maria. We were covered for sure on Paddy’s Day as she drove around Dublin taking in all the historic sites lit up Green! And filmed it all for Snapchat!

Hope you have enjoyed our little SSSS recap. I’ll be back again next Sunday spreading the LOVE and shining a Spotlight on a hand picked and deserved Snap Sista!  Until then… Happy Easter to one and all!

Lots of love to you and my Snap Sistas,

YDP

P.S. Since this post went up, I have done another Sunday Spotlight Snap Sista Recap of honorees 10-19! So click here if you’d like to see more fabulousness!

Recipe: Woman Crush Wednesday

Do you remember back to when you were a kid and that feeling you got the night before Christmas? Just busting to wake in the morning to see all the wonderful treats under the tree? Well that is how I am on Tuesdays, beyond excited for Woman Crush Wednesday to arrive!  A wonderful day to indulge the infatuation over a female foodie, and recreate one of her recipes live on Snapchat (my username is: blissbakery)

IMG_7447

For those of you not on Snapchat (yet) on here I share my “love story” as I call it, of this gorgeous gourmet gal.  And highlight the recipe for her delicious treat that I make for the tutorial. Today our fantastic female is straight from a farm in Ireland.  Imen McDonnell is known around the globe as the American lady whose heart was swept away by an Irish farmer. His gain was also our gain. Imen took to country life and used the experience as an outlet for her creativity. Writing a famous blog called Farmette, raising a handsome son and doing loads of cooking and baking along the way.

breadme

I had the most amazing fortune to actually meet her yesterday!  Her first book has just been published and she is on the road promoting it. Luckily one of the stops on her tour was London.  So I headed down to the Violet Bakery (where I went just a couple of weeks ago for a Foodie Fieldtrip Friday) and  purchased a book, had it personalized by Imen, and most of all got to have a wee chat!  She was surrounded by adoring fans, but took time to have a personalized conversation with each one of us.

farm

She is absolutely stunning and yet so warm and approachable. She was wearing her signature apron and with her thick blond curls and flawless skin, she looks like she stepped out of an ad for Town and Country.  But when you talk to her, the calm and approachable manner that shines through in her writing was what you felt. I’m only new to social media and have been following along on her gorgeous Instagram and Twitter accounts. She is very active and supportive of other foodies and important food issues.  Especially as it relates to Irish agriculture specifically and farming in general.  Her support of Irish food led her to produce an amazing film called Small Green Fields. It is an ode to Irish artisan foodie products and will likely leave you with a tear or two as it is so poignant and precious.

calf2

I have been an admirer for quite some time of that treasured blog of hers. Classic, timeless recipes and photos that are effortlessly styled, all of which she does on her own. This woman’s talents know no bounds!

The book has so many fabulous recipes  I’d like to try, but thought a nice loaf of Irish bread would be perfect. So let’s give the Irish Stout and Treacle Loaf a go shall we?

IMG_7446

Ingredients

2 cups (250 g) all purpose flour

2 cups (250 g) whole wheat flour

1 3/4 cups oats (150 g) rolled oats, plus more for sprinkling (optional)

1 TBSP baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

2 cups (500 ml) buttermilk

2 TBSP black treacle (or molasses

1/4 cup (60 ml) Irish Stout

2 TBPS honey

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F/200C. Line a 9-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing blow, stir together the flours, oats, baking soda and salt. Make a well in the middle and pour in the buttermilk, treacle, stout and honey. Using your fingers, lightly mix into a wet dough. Do not over mix or knead
  3. Spoon into the loaf pan, and slit the top of the dough with a knife. Sprinkle with rolled oats (if using) Bake for 45-50 minutes.
  4. Remove the pan from the oven. Turn the bread out, transfer to a wire rack, and lay a slightly damp tea towel over the top;  leave to cool completely.  The tea towel will help keep the moisture in and the crust from becoming too hard.

IMG_7455

Let’s just say that I could have eaten this entire loaf! I was good, however, and only ate a slice off the end (slathered in Irish butter no less). But it is absolutely divine! The treacle and honey add the perfect sweet combo, and the color and flavor reflect the Guinness richness. I read in the book that this bread makes for a lovely cheese toastie! Of course not just any kind of cheese toastie. Imen makes hers with some Gruyere and sliced apple. Mmmm, I’d be having that too please!

It was a lovely day to spend focused on the food, ethos and effervescence of the amazing Imen. I felt like I was on the farm with her baking away singing  some Country Western tunes (though I’m very bad at the signing part). As I look through the book in the days ahead I will treasure it even more now. Because there is a lovely handwritten note about our joint American birthplace. And though neither of us lives there anymore, it is another way to find common ground.

IMG_7484

Thanks Imen for your inspiration. Thanks to the farmer who stole your heart. And best wishes to both of you and your son on everything.  You’re a most deserving family!

Big time  love,

YDP

Foodie Fieldtrip Friday: Cereal Killer Cafe

IMG_7179

If my grown kids read this post they will think it is utterly ironic that I took a Foodie Fieldtrip Friday to the Cereal Killer Cafe. You see, when they were young I didn’t buy sugary cereals. I wanted to give them the most healthy foods possible. And when I did give them a treat, it was usually a home baked, unprocessed dessert with very little sugar. As they got older, I  might have let them have a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios for a weekend splurge.

IMG_7186

As a child my family situation was quite different.  We were so poor that though we did eat sugary cereal, it was never the name brand kind. So when I had the chance to choose a cereal from over 100 varieties at the Cereal Killer Cafe, I was overwhelmed!  Therefore, I went with my YDP compass (short for Yankee Doodle PADDY) and opted for Lucky Charms!  It was quite sweet with the colorful marshmallows of “pink hearts, yellow stars, blue moons and green clovers” as the voice over actor on the television commercial used to say in a pretend Irish accent. Pretty cool at 51 years old to finally be eating some!  Funny side note, there is a selection of different milks you can order to go with your cereal.  I ordered mine with Unsweetened Almond Milk.  I guess that is similar to when people get a cheeseburger and then order a Diet Coke. However you get yours, the mini milk bottle is a sweet touch.

IMG_7182IMG_7181

I’ve been wanting to check out the CKC for quite a while actually. When I did the London Food Tour of the East End back in October (click here to read) I got to see how hip and cool the famous Brick Lane area was. The whole vibe with the street art and all is quite unique. And so a cereal only cafe couldn’t be situated in a more perfect spot!

IMG_7208

Started by twin brothers Alan and Gary Keery from Belfast, this place is an 80s/90s pop paradise. The entire place is decorated in memorabilia from that era featuring old fashioned television sets and VHS cassettes playing cartoons from back in the day. Even the music on the speakers is picked to perfection only adding to the complete touch while you mow down a bowl or two of your favorite brand of cereal.

IMG_7199
#Snappy and his girlfriend Rose Kitty came along too! They had Hello Kitty Cereal, but it was display only.

However, what makes this place so awesome, is that their menu is more diverse than just bowls of cereal. It offers “Cereal Cocktails” with clever names. I almost ordered the “S’more Than Words” (Golden Grahams cereal served with chocolate milk and topped with marshmallows). Another choice would have been “Unicorn Poop” that is a combination of  colorful cereal, marshmallows and rainbow sprinkles, that, well, looks like it sounds!

IMG_7195

They have a range of Barista coffees and teas and “Stacked Hot Chocolates” as well. This is where I got into the naughty territory. I indulged in a “Stacked Reeses Puff” hot chocolate that was literally to die for, no joke!  However, the chocolate milk was made with rice milk, and the whipped cream on top was made with soya cream.  But it was topped with Reeses peanut butter chips, Reeces Puffs cereal and a giant chunk of a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup on the side of the mug!  HELLO! NEED HELP DOT COM!

IMG_7225
Americans are obsessed with peanut butter, so my “stacked hot chocolate” fit the bill. Then the Lucky Charms were very Irish with the colorful rainbow marshmallows. I was a happy YDP!

But I defo want to go back again because there were so many types of cereal I’d like to try. They carry American, British and Global varieties.  And yes they even have healthier cereals as well.  They also have POP Tarts!  If you need a gift or souvenir, they sell loads of tchotchkes such as magnets, cereal flavored lip balms and the famous Cereal Killers Cafe cookbook. They also have party packages for young and old, and the list of party suggestions is hysterical. Obviously they list the usual birthday party, but they offer brand/product launches, bar mitzvahs and divorce parties! OMG!

IMG_7215

This place is a must stop for anyone visiting London that wants to add a bit of fun and novelty to their experience. They have two locations, the first at 139 Brick Lane that I visited opened in December, 2014. Another is located in the North London area called Camden.  And if you aren’t planning a trip to the Big Smoke, why not open a cafe in your hometown? From what I can tell, the brothers are mighty business men as well. They are selling international franchises, so if you are mad about the idea, go for it and start your own CKC!  Then you can have your cereal and eat it too no matter where you are!

IMG_7220IMG_7212

Love you like a big bowl of sugary crunch!

YDP

P.S. I just want to add that the service was really lovely! All the staff were friendly and I had a nice chat with one in particular, Orla, who hails from Dublin (where Hubby and I still have our home).  It really is a small world!

How Snapchat Saved My Life

Image-1

While the title of this post might seem a bit dramatic, considering that I almost got killed the first week of using Snapchat, it’s actually quite accurate. I wrote about it at the time, which you can read by clicking here, but in a nutshell, I was “snapping” while walking and cracked my head on a large glass door. Yep, that’s what I do, Miss Clumsy. It made me think that this whole social media thing, which was quite new to me back then, was best left for the “youngins” and at 50 years old, I figured my sell by date had long expired for Snapchat. However, I left it up to the viewers to decide. In the first of many random draw competitions I’ve hosted, I asked folks to snap me a little text as to why I should stay on Snapchat. Amazing notes from strangers. “Imaginary friends” I referred to them at the time. Someone won a prize and well,  I stayed on…six months later and I’m still here!  Though, I attempt to be a bit more careful while I snap so as to not run into glass doors!

But the truth is that Snapchat has become such a part of my life now. I use it nearly every day and communicate with people all over the world, such as Australia, America, Ireland, Pakistan, Korea and here in the U.K just to name a few. I do cooking tutorials, a weekly outing called Foodie Fieldtrip Friday, Woman Crush Wednesday (where I choose a female chef and recreate one of her recipes live on Snapchat) and the much anticipated Sunday Spotlight Snap Sista (that focuses on one person from Snapchat Land whereby I share things about that person and explain why I follow them, while I shower them with love too). I have met some amazing people through this social media platform, and some of them I have been lucky enough to meet in person as well.

When I first moved to London with my husband I felt very homesick for Ireland.  It is my soul home and while I love London and it has grown on me over time, seeing all the snaps from people in Ireland literally kept me going. When I longed to hear the gorgeous Irish lilting accent, all I need to do was turn to my Snapchat and watch some snaps from the old sod. I shared openly on my Snapchat story about my craving for anything Irish, and lo and behold many snappers from the Emerald Isle would send me private snaps of the rolling green hills and soft rainfall that I so missed. I am forever in debt to them!

Because I worked three jobs in Dublin, and  I hadn’t yet gotten a job here in London, I had a hard time being idle. My hubby said I was a workaholic, but I like to think of myself as a “Productive-aholic”. The main thing for me was the social interaction. Going from meeting and working with several hundred customers a day, to being in our flat all day with only our doggie was a drastic change. So interacting with people on Snapchat felt like I had supplemented my need for human contact (even if it was through a 4×2 inch mobile device).

As I have said before, tech is not my thing. But I am very persistent and kept at it. Snapchat (to be honest here) isn’t the most user friendly social media app.  But I kinda think they want it that way.  It makes it fun, challenging and even intriguing, like an archeological dig, sorting out ways to post snaps, find followers and also to get your own message out there. You have to rely on “shout outs” from others to gain new followers,  or by using your other social media resources to get people to join your Snapchat account. And though there isn’t anything formal, there is a kind of unwritten code of conduct amongst those in Snapland. I like to refer to it as “SNAPCHETIQUETTE”.

I’ve done an entire post on this topic as it is very important to earn the respect and indeed trust of those in the community. Here are just a few of the important points of snapchetiquette:

Shoutouts: It is the main way to gain followers. But there is a polite way to do it and receive it.

N-gagin: This is SOCIAL MEDIA for gosh sakes, so there has to be some eN-gagin’ going on!

Appropriateness: I think it goes without saying that any images or video on Snapchat should be appropriate and decent.

Promoting: Let’s face it, Snapchat is here to stay and is literally taking the social media world by storm. It has also become a place for companies to promote their products. No problem, but it is proper to have transparency and disclose this to those watching.

And that my friends, should be easy enough to remember as together they make the acronym S.N.A.P!

I know I am not the “Miss Manners” of Snapchat, however, I do try to be the Spreader of LOVE and POSITIVITY. Because you end up getting it back threefold.  I have laughed until I almost wet my pants at some of the funny snap stories out there.  And I have also dried my tears until there were none left from some of the poignant things I have seen people share.  Considering that hubby and I still haven’t hooked up our television set to cable, Snapchat is in essence my entertainment as well!  It is so much better than Instagram in my book because it is raw and real. It is not doctored by food stylists, photo shop and filters (though people do like the funny filters with mouse faces and such). It is also a great creative outlet for some of us. I am a music fan so I enjoy incorporating music into my cooking tutorials and use the drawing option to circle certain ingredients in the pics of my recipes.

I feel privileged to have been a part of people’ s birthday celebrations, wedding hens (bachelorette parties), anniversaries etc through their Snapchat images and I try to send a personal congratulatory message when I can. I have also been touched to hear stories of illness and bereavement, of which I will offer a prayer or encouraging word. I have been fortunate to be asked to read people’s blogs and give feedback, which is the ultimate honor. Mostly, I enjoy getting to know people and feel inspired by their own personal quests and goals. I love watching all the babies, kids, dogs, cats, moms, dads and grandparents etc. I am a social being and feel totally blessed to use Snapchat to not only watch but indeed socialize with all these amazing snappers.

By the same token, I’ve received wonderful messages from folks out in Snapchat Land encouraging me when I’ve had a tough day.  Such as the time, which I shared on here, when I celebrated my missing mother’s birthday. And another time I felt the support in a different sort of way was when Hubby and I had come through immigration in Copenhagen. The officer called me a “Plastic Paddy” because my Irish Passport lists my place of birth as U.S.A.  I was literally in tears telling the man my blood is green I am so Irish, hence the Yankee Doodle PADDY! And some of the folks that watched that snap of mine took time out of their day to reassure me that indeed I am Irish, no matter what my passport or a mean immigration officer may say!  As well I have had so many kind notes from snappers thanking me for brightening up their days.

I suppose I am not the only one that found a surrogate family through Snapchat. While some might be on Facebook (I am not and here is the story that explains why), Instagram, and Twitter, I think Snapchat is the most engaging and bond forming, even if it isn’t as user friendly from a tech standpoint. While I don’t have a business, or products to promote, I have a story to tell. I started this blog to tell the story and also share my love of food. On snapchat I don’t necessarily discuss my “stories” on my story, if that makes sense. I keep things on Snapchat light and happy. But if you’ve read anything on this blog you know that there are some powerful things that have happened in my life. Rather than bury those situations away, I have chosen to be open about them in hopes of inspiring others.  I don’t ask snappers to go like my Facebook page or vote for me on a competition.  However, I might steer them here to read about overcoming depression, getting through a divorce and how to heal from childhood abuse.  Because I believe in transparency,  I have my own bit of disclosure.

If people see me happy all the time (which I am) they might think, “I wish I had her life”. But once they read about it they might be more grateful where they stand.  And also might realize that bad things can happen to good people.  But it’s not what happens to them it is how they deal with it. In fact, six months ago, I could have said, “the heck with it, snappage isn’t worth it if I crack open my head”.  But I decided, no I am going to keep at it because I have a purpose in life.  That purpose is to spread LOVE.  So Snapchat has saved my life, and I hope that I might be able to shine a bit of light into other people’s lives.  And, maybe just a little bit of light is all that is needed to save another life!

Thank you Snapchat! And thank you to all the lovely Snappers out there for spreading the LOVE!

Happy to be alive,

YDP

This is what I wish I could have on my Snapchat code! Cuz this is my purpose, to spread the LOVE and this would let people know with one look what I am all about!

Foodie Fieldtrip Friday becomes a Saturday Surprise!

IMG_6962

While a Foodie Fieldtrip Friday is freakin awesome on its own, when you get to incorporate it into meeting one of your fav people from Snapchat, it becomes a super duper Saturday Surprise! Since I was posting all this onto my Snapchat account (username: blissbakery) I didn’t tell them who I was meeting, so as to amp up the suspense! Haha!

Violet-D7_03A5303

The foodie destination was the famous bakery called Violet. Started by American Clair Ptak back in 2010, it was a natural out growth of her success selling cupcakes from a stall at Broadway Market. Claire had been a pastry chef for the award winning restaurant Chez Panisse in the Bay Area of Northern California. And she brought those fresh, natural and seasonal sensibilities with her when she landed in the U.K in 2005.

The location is in a neighborhood on London’s East side and is much smaller than I had imagined. But it has two levels, the bakery and shop downstairs, and seating upstairs. As well there is a small back garden with seating and plenty of outdoor seating in front and the side of the bakery.  I love the fact that the baking is done literally at arms length from the customers. You can see what the chefs are doing whilst they ice the cupcakes with the gorgeous buttercream or drizzle the lemon glaze on the tarts. The place smells incredible because of the open kitchen, which only intensifies the hankering for the gorgeous looking baked goods. They serve coffees of all sorts and, very exciting, they serve and sell Barry’s Tea (a staple in Ireland)!!  I even spotted a famous Irish Lass on one of the magazines they have on offer in the upstairs dining area. I loved all the other bits and pieces of memorabilia and decor around the place. Like even a framed note from, HELLO, Nigella Lawson!

IMG_6966IMG_6967IMG_6968

While I waited for my surprise Snap Sista to arrive I perused the bakery up, down, and side ways and drooled over all of it!  Metaphorically speaking! I do know a thing or two about health and safety regulations! Very rustic and casual the way things are displayed allowed the pure beauty of the cakes to shine without any fuss! There are cases that are almost antique wood with glass fronts on them and with the natural sunlight dipping through the windows it felt dreamy, almost like a scene from a movie. A very tasty movie!

IMG_6969IMG_6971IMG_6970

Can we talk about cakes though, seriously? The color of the mini layer sponge cake was such a pretty lavender and the cupcakes came in flavors such as rhubarb, salted caramel and chocolate. I think I might have died and gone to heaven at that juncture!

IMG_6972IMG_6965IMG_6976

Though I arrived quite early for our meeting, my Snap Sista Miriam from Bake My Style showed up right on time!  It was such a joy to finally meet in person after all this time!  She is a lovely Irish girl from County Kerry and has lived here in London for the past four years. Besides following her on Snapchat and Instagram (her user name is @bakemystyle) I have used her restaurant reviews of London from her blog to help guide my gastronomic explorations here!

IMG_6975

She’s even more gorgeous and sweet in person. She said it perfectly at the end of our visit (which could have gone on for days what with all there was to discuss) when she said her cheeks hurt from all the smiling. My sentiments exactly!  Like when I met Kelly Lou Cakes on last week’s Foodie Fieldtrip Friday Adventure, it is wonderful to be in the presence of people whom inspire you! And both Miriam and I were delighted to try Violet for the first time as Claire Ptak is an inspiration for both of us bakers!

IMG_6978

Claire has written and co written cookery books before, but this one is really world class!   The Violet Bakery Cookbook is chock-a-block with sumptuous photos (from the amazing Kristin Perers) and recipes of the classic and popular treats Claire has become known for.  And since Miriam had recently received a copy of the book, tasting the recipes made “in house” was the ultimate research!  We each had a bit of eachother’s and I have to say the cupcake was not as sweet as one would think.  Most American style baking can be too sweet, but this was very mild. Which allowed the rhubarb and vanilla flavor to come through without vying for attention due to being overly sweetened.  The Buckwheat Blood Orange Cake was very tangy and luscious, quite a treat!

IMG_6979

I left Violet feeling very full indeed. Not only with a delicious treat, but the treat of meeting the lovely Miriam. I do hope to be back again to try more baked goods on the menu.  The savory ones looked divine as well. And I suspect I might be seeing Miriam again soon. With all the exciting things she has in store (of which I will let her reveal to you) I’ll be there rooting her on for sure. When people are excited to wake at all hours of the morning to bust out the mixer and fire up the oven to bake something new, the only ones who get it are in fact other mad bakers!  So who knows, we might even have to join forces on a recipe one day! Until then, thanks Claire and Violet Bakery for the gorgeous desserts!  As well thanks Miriam for a some great chats, bants and LOLz!  My cheeks are still sore from all the smiling!

Sweet love,

YDP

P.S. Of course the Snapchat mascot himself #Snappy came along, as did his rose colored  companion. Keeping it in the family so to speak, they had to meet Miriam!

Foodie Fieldtrip Friday: Cakes and Curry

images-1
Kelly Ging of Kelly Lou Cakes is not only a talented baker and brainy business woman, but she also has the sweetest smile ever!

Most people like to eat their savory foods first, then go for a sweet treat. Well for this week’s Foodie Fieldtrip Friday, I turned that notion on its head! AND, I headed out first to County Laois, Ireland to get a sugar high and meet one of my favorite Snapchatters, the lovely Kelly of Kelly Lou Cakes. She was a recent Sunday Spotlight Snap Sista (a weekly series where I focus on one person from Snapchat and give them LOVE and share a bit of info about them). Of course, I had to post this little adventure onto my Snapchat story for everyone else to see (my username is: blissbakery if you’d like to check it out).  I was very excited to get to meet her in person and honored to get to taste her amazing creations.

Besides the fact that I got lost on the way down there due to some turned around traffic signs, it was all good. Kelly Lou Cakes is a little bakery and cafe in the back of the Baker & Cook shop located in Kealew Business Park in Portloaise.  It is filled with lovely pastel colors and loads of sample cakes to make it all look pretty.  I especially love the gifts and wedding area. So festive!

Kelly majored in business at university, but her pastry talents are self taught. Growing up in a home where her mom did a lot of baking, she may have come by it naturally.  But Kelly is such a hard worker and is always perfecting her sugar craft skills, testing new recipes and working VERY long hours creating bespoke wedding and celebration cakes!  Nevertheless, she still posts weekly baking tutorials on Snapchat (her username is: kellyloucakes).

But, of course my fav parts of the excursion were meeting Kelly and indulging in some of her beautiful baked babies!  Like my all time top flavor ice cream, but as a cupcake. Yep, Rocky Road!!!  DELISH!  Kelly and I had a great chat while we each had toasted cheese sambos.  She shared some future goals, which I will let her reveal.  But no doubt they will come to fruition. With her business acumen and warm and charming ways, the sky is the limit for her.  She has already been featured in Confetti Magazine for a wedding cakes special, and been asked to speak at several women in business seminars.

IMG_6758IMG_6761IMG_6750

Typical Irish, we didn’t meet with empty hands.  She and I both had little gifts for each other. But her gift was so amazing!  I’ve been doing a little story on my Snapchat about the mascot (which I call Snappy) that was given to me when I visited the Snapchat Headquarters in Venice, California.  Along the way he gained a little friend (Rose Kitty) and, well, let’s say their love story is trending. LOL!  Anyway, I had made some Snapchat logo cookies which Kelly saw on my Snapchat story. Well, she surprised me with this incredible Lemon Sponge Layer cake with Snappy on top!  Wowza!  And then even posted a pic of the lil gift I gave her (just a small cupcake shaped tin of mints) onto her story. She really is even nicer in person than the already kind lady she is on social media.

IMG_6756IMG_6715

All of her baked gorgeousness is also mobile!  There is a lil camper van called Gloria which travels to different music festivals and is very popular as a treat for wedding receptions. I absolutely loved my visit out to Kelly Lou Cakes , and can hardly wait to go again! What are you waiting for?  You ought to go yourself. Only one hour drive outside Dublin, that is if you don’t run across road signs that have been turned around!

Unknown-1

While driving back to Dublin, I had some “messers” in the back seat! Haha! But I was bound and determined to finish off the Foodie Fieldtrip Friday with a savory stop. Of course, finding locations are always an adventure for someone that has yet to embrace new fangled technology! Remember, I’ve already disclosed my lack of technology skills on the ABC of YDP!

IMG_6739IMG_6741

I’ve heard it said many times that certain foods can be thought of as medicinal. Meaning if eaten frequently it serves as a medicine, tonic, healer or immunity booster. One of those foods is curry. Got a sniffle coming on, then go eat a spicy curry dish and this too shall pass! Though I’m feeling good at the moment, everyone I know is sick. So looks like the second half of the FFF (Foodie Fieldtrip Friday) will just have to include something hot and flavorful!

images

I ended the day at the coolest curry restaurant in which I’ve ever been. And, since I now live in London and have frequented the famous “Curry Mile” numerous times, this is a big compliment. Kerala Kitchen has been in business for a while now, but only as a mobile restaurant. They had been serving their gorgeous food at markets and music festivals for years. But they finally got their brick and mortar (located at 5 Baggot Street Upper) and it is beautiful!

IMG_6774IMG_6777IMG_6724

When you first walk in you notice the cool decor and vibe, with large copper pots (traditionally used to cook the curry in) transformed into the lighting fixtures. And the stunning framed photographs taken in India make you feel like you are practically there. Especially when you get a whiff of the the beautiful aromas coming from the kitchen!

IMG_6776IMG_6780IMG_6775

I love the wood floors, the family style seating on long tables with benches, and I really adore the signage.  I mean how cute is this sign for the men and ladies toilets? The antique wooden hutches filled with kilner jars of spices also give you the feel you are in someone’s home, very cozy! There are even seat cushions made from the rice bags!  As you guessed, Snappy and Rose Kitty were there too!

IMG_6778IMG_6779

But when one goes to a restaurant, though the physical environment is important, what is most important is indeed the FOOD!  Well, this was without a doubt the best tasting Indian food I have ever had.  It was tasty, light, clean, satisfying and inventive. I mean who knew you could get a salad (which if you read my Salad Scentral post on here then you know I’m a salad addict) like this one at a curry shop?

IMG_6729
Clockwise from the bottom left: Poppadoms, Naan Bread, Salad, Chicken Tikka Masala, Kerala Coconut Chicken, and Pilau Rice

Of course, I way over ordered as I do, and had so much food, but ate it for left overs too!  I also got a Saag Paneer (a spinach and Indian cheese dish) but didn’t eat it with this plate of food. There was no room. But it was absolutely delicious! I’m going to be dreaming of this food now for months! Yep, those are the kind of dreams I have.  The good news is that the price is budget friendly, and the upstairs dining room with the tall ceilings and giant windows looking down onto the street make for a wonderful casually elegant experience!  But if you wanted to eat at home in your PJs, they offer take away and delivery as well. But the service and staff are top notch and friendly so you’d miss out on that aspect if you were hunkered down at home.

IMG_6731IMG_6730

All in all it was a one of my favorite Foodie Fieldtrip Friday’s EVER! And now writing up this post is making me want to go back to both Kelly Lou Cakes and Kerala Kitchen right now! But until then I will savor the memories of this FUNtastic day!

Sweet and Spicy LOVE,

YDP
